1 O LORD, our Lord, How majestic is Your name in all the earth, Who have displayed Your splendor above the heavens! 2 From the mouth of infants and nursing babes You have established strength Because of Your adversaries, To make the enemy and the revengeful cease.

3 When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, The moon and the stars, which You have ordained; 4 What is man that You take thought of him, And the son of man that You care for him?

5 Yet You have made him a little lower than God, And You crown him with glory and majesty! 6 You make him to rule over the works of Your hands; You have put all things under his feet, 7 All sheep and oxen, And also the beasts of the field, 8 The birds of the heavens and the fish of the sea, Whatever passes through the paths of the seas.

9 O LORD, our Lord, How majestic is Your name in all the earth!

W. Tozer said that he had not found a definition of “worship” that he thought rightfully defined the concept. In a sermon he preached entitled: Worship: A Definition of Worship, Part 1 he is quoted: “What is worship?” “To worship is to feel in the heart—not to strike a certain pose necessarily. An expression in some appropriate manner, a humbling but yet delightful sense of admiring awe and astonished wonder in the presence of the Lord our God.” In this sermon he went on to say that worship is “an overwhelming love in the presence of that most ancient mystery that unspeakable majesty…which the prophets call the Lord our God. Maybe through a form of word, maybe through Psalms or reading of the Scriptures, it may be in awesome silence or it may be in loud praise.”

I have attached, for you, a short biography of A. W. Tozer and a list of his books and other writings. He is always worth a serious read.

Biography

Hailing from a tiny farming community in western La Jose, Pennsylvania, his conversion was as a teenager in Akron, Ohio. While on his way home from work at a tire company, he overheard a street preacher say: “If you don’t know how to be saved… just call on God.” Upon returning home, he climbed into the attic and heeded the preacher’s advice.

In 1919, five years after his conversion, and without formal theological training, Tozer accepted an offer to pastor his first church. This began 44 years of ministry, associated with the Christian and Missionary Alliance (C&MA), a Protestant evangelical denomination; 33 of those years were served as a pastor in a number of churches. His first pastorate was in a small storefront church in Nutter Fort, West Virginia. Tozer also served as pastor for 30 years at Southside Alliance Church, in Chicago (1928 to 1959), and the final years of his life were spent as pastor of Avenue Road Church, in Toronto, Canada. In observing contemporary Christian living, he felt that the church was on a dangerous course toward compromising with “worldly” concerns.

In 1950, Tozer received an honorary Doctor of Letters degree from Wheaton College. It was May 1950, when Tozer was elected editor of the Alliance Weekly magazine, now called, Alliance Life, the official publication of the C&MA. From his first editorial, dated June 3, 1950, he wrote, “It will cost something to walk slow in the parade of the ages, while excited men of time rush about confusing motion with progress. But it will pay in the long run and the true Christian is not much interested in anything short of that.” In 1952, he received an LL.D. degree from Houghton College.[2]

Among the more than 40 books that he authored, at least two are regarded as Christian classics: The Pursuit of God and The Knowledge of the Holy. His books impress on the reader the possibility and necessity for a deeper relationship with God.

Living a simple and non-materialistic lifestyle, he and his wife, Ada Cecelia Pfautz, never owned a car, preferring bus and train travel. Even after becoming a well-known Christian author, Tozer signed away much of his royalties to those who were in need.

Tozer had seven children, six boys and one girl. He was buried in Ellet Cemetery, Akron, Ohio, with a simple epitaph marking his grave: “A. W. Tozer – A Man of God.” [3]

Prayer was of vital personal importance for Tozer. “His preaching as well as his writings were but extensions of his prayer life,” comments his biographer, James L. Snyder, in the book, In Pursuit of God: The Life Of A.W. Tozer. “He had the ability to make his listeners face themselves in the light of what God was saying to them,” writes Snyder.

Holy Word

A blog by Dr. John D. Abbott, Jr.

Faith

Definition of FAITH (Noun or Verb)

Allegiance to duty or a person

Belief and trust in and loyalty to God

Firm belief in something for which there is no proof

Complete trust.

Something that is believed especially with strong conviction

This definition came from an internet dictionary and gives a simple but weak definition. Allegiance to duty? I am just not sure that this has anything to do with faith, perhaps allegiance to a person in some small way does. Belief and trust in and loyalty to God is getting warmer of course, however, the definition gets weak when you add “firm belief in something for which there is no proof.” There is considerable proof of the value in faith in Jesus Christ (Changed lives by the millions, the revelations of scripture, the peace that passes understanding, the power of the Holy Spirit at work in our lives and one could go on and on. To me faith must be followed with a strong conviction. A strong conviction that allows to be unwavering in our obedience to Jesus Christ.

James 2:17 “In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action is dead.” This passage supports the idea that faith is a verb.

To better grasp faith in the context of Christianity read Hebrews chapter 11 in its entirety.

Q: If God already knows what is going to happen, and He has given us free will, how is anything we do not part of God’s plan?

A: Great question! I need to talk about God’s allowing will, His perfect will and His foreknowledge to answer. God’s allowing will gives room for us to make decisions that are not His best for us, that are not His perfect will for us (His perfect will would be us choosing His exact and best plan for our lives). Does He know what we will choose? Of course, but that does not mean that He institutes those (or imposes) His best on us so we cannot choose wrongly. If so, then His best could potentially include us choosing sin, which is impossible with the character of God to allow. God’s foreknowledge, is then, what He knows in advance (all things) but what He allows to unfold with free will. His love for us allows for free-will, or that would mean that he makes us choose to love Him too, and what kind of love would that be?

Q: Satan tempted Jesus while He was on earth, what kind of temptations? Lust? Gluttony? Laziness?

A: Great question! Although we do not have record of any temptations besides those listed in Luke 4, and then the temptation to not go to the cross, we can be sure that Jesus faced all the normal temptations that are human to endure. If not, how could He identify with our humanness? The whole purpose for Him to come to earth was to identify with us and to experience life like we do. Now, did He experience every single solitary temptation every single human experience? Likely not! He did not have to and still have a human life. We can be sure that the devil tried to hit Him at what would be perceived as His weakest places. Mainly, the devil wanted Him to use His divine powers in a way that kept Him from living a perfect life as a human. That would have been satan’s greatest victory, at which he (the devil) miserably failed.

Q: If the “end” is judgment day, and you die before judgment day, are you still judged or do you sit in a “waiting room” until judgment day?

A: Wow, great question! Somewhat of a dilemma to answer because there seems to be missing in the Bible, a little clarity. The two largest texts that speak to this are found in Jesus’ own words, although Paul also shares something too. Jesus said to the thief on the cross, “today you will be with me in paradise (Luke 23:43).” Well I doubt if He would call sitting in a room for a couple hundred or more years, “paradise.” So, it seems that at least the spirit is immediate in its migration to either heaven or hell. Because in a parable, there is a rich man, and a poor man. Now, parables are stories told to teach a truth. And the truth of this particular story teaches that heaven or hell is immediate, and that you cannot travel back and forth from heaven or hell (which means that ghosts are actually demons and not human spirits). That parable is found in Luke 16:19-31. So, it must be that our spirits go first, then the time comes later for the bodily resurrection, and when the two (body and spirit) are reunited, the judgment happens (unless you happen to be living at the time Christ Jesus returns). Now, if that is not the case, then what Paul says informs us also: “Therefore we are always confident and know that as long as we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord. We live by faith, not by sight. We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord.” II Corinthians 5:6-8. Paul also is saying to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. I hope this helps.

Q: Because as a nation, we seem to be self-conscious of what we say. What is the proper thing to say or do when someone doesn’t want to acknowledge your prayer, such as those before a meal, (or) when you pray in Jesus’ name?

A: Great question. You are facing what many of us face today: an expectation that Christians acquiesce (give in) to what everybody else wants while relinquishing our own beliefs. One person complains about a manger scene on a city square and everyone who appreciates gets deprived. Honestly, part of that comes from Christians being unwilling to stand up without becoming disagreeable or outright poor witnesses. As a chaplain (while in seminary I served as a chaplain at U.K. Medical Center) I offered to pray for a patient I had visited and his response: ”You can pray if you want to, but I won’t.” My response was “OK, I will.” And I simply prayed for him. I know this is not as easy to do as it is for me to type, and since I do not know the exact scenario, I can only make a suggestion. But here, I will encourage you to not let what someone else says (spouse, or boyfriend or girlfriend or parent) or doesn’t say keep you from honoring your God. If this person is in your house or visiting your house, and you want to pray at dinner, then pray at dinner. Our love for family or friends cannot be greater than our love for the One who saves us. If you are at another person’s house, and dinner is served then you might not pray out loud, but you can still bow your head and say a silent prayer to honor the Lord Jesus. Faith is a personal thing, deeper than human love, because it is your own. It is you, the most inner you. No one deserves that kind of honor, except the Lord.

Moving Toward Forever

By Dr. John D. Abbott, Jr.

Some research done by me used a blog called Agape Geek

Have you ever considered that second by second, minute by minute, hour by hour, day by day, week by week, month by month, and year by year we are moving toward forever? I think not, at least for most of us. We tend to think that forever is encapsulated in the here and now. I often hear young people comment on time frames as if they are forever, and many people seem to think that forever just means a long time. So, really, what does it mean that we are moving toward forever?

Ecclesiastes 3:11 (NIV) “He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the hearts of men; yet they cannot fathom what God has done from beginning to end.” The word that I want us to focus on here is “eternity.”

Today I want to do something different to stimulate and exercise your mind. I want to get you to thinking of some things that you may have never thought of before. God spoke to me through a song on Tuesday through the words “moving toward forever and taught me some new concepts about eternity that I have never even thought of before. Today, the problem with most people is that they are not spiritually aware enough to realize when God is saying anything to them. Knowing how God talks to you is the key to hearing from God and I will not comment on that any further. So this is what the Spirit of God said to me, “Are there any limits to what you can know?” I took this to mean will there ever come a time when we are in eternity with God that we will reach a point that there is nothing else for us to learn? I mean forever is a very long time. Humans cannot even fathom the definition of what eternity is. After we go beyond billions or trillions, most people stop trying to process what those kinds of numbers mean in our brain. We have no reference point to the experience of eternity that even comes close to what forever means. We are born on this planet with a limited perspective and we may live even 100 years and this is nothing compared to eternity. It would be like one cell out of every cell in our universe combined. Even Adam or Methuselah in the O.T. never lived to be older than 1000 years old. Methuselah the oldest recorded living man in the Bible, only lived 969 years. This is a nothing number compared to eternity. So there is no human on the earth that has any clue of how long eternity is. So here is the key question today to challenge you to think; where are you going to spend forever?

Isa 57:15 For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.

As you can clearly see, the Bible says that God lives in eternity. I looked up the word “eternity” to see the definition and it means “forever” or “without end”. Eternity is clearly just a concept to us that we have great difficulty in comprehending fully. God exists outside of the realm of time and yet sent Jesus Christ into the realm of time at the perfect time to accomplish what God needed to accomplish. So I believe that the dimension of time does not limit God. Einstein theorized that as we approach the speed of light that time would slow and then finally stop. I find that very interesting since the Bible says that God is Light! That is pretty awesome stuff to think on, but yet they are nothing compared to what God has in store for us in the future:

1Co 2:9 But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.

When you start to think differently you begin to see old Bible verses in new enlightening ways. Is it beginning to get into your heart like it is mine? I think if it is, then we have only scratched the tip of the iceberg of knowing who God is and how much He loves us. Be a thinker, but begin to see God as He sees us. The Bible says that we have the mind of Christ, so begin to think like God. I know that I can hardly wait for the eternity of good things to come from God. I hope that I at least stimulated your mind to think today, like God did my mind last Tuesday afternoon. You may not agree with the things that I said, but that is OK also. Today was not a lesson on how to be saved so it really doesn’t matter that much. Today’s lesson was designed to get you to think eternally, infinitely, as a course for your future existence with God. If you disagree with anything that I said I’ll read it, but I probably won’t respond to the negative words of critics’ unless you can show me some Bible verses. You see I don’t know everything and I am perfectly willing to change to be right as long as I can see it in the Bible. In the meantime I’ll do my own search of the Bible using my computer to see if I can learn anything about what God has challenged me to think on.

Be continually blessed and encouraged in growing in the knowledge of Him. You are moving toward forever!

A: Good question. The answer is a little tricky, in the sense that Scripture is silent when it comes to that exact moment when she became impregnated by the Word of God through the Holy Spirit, except where it says in Matthew 1:20, “what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit,” and in Luke 1:35, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you….” There are many verses that speak to Jesus being “without sin” or “perfect” (Hebrews 2:10; 4:15; 5:8-9; 7:28, II Corinthians 5:21, I Peter 2:22, I John 3:5) so we simply are compelled to deduce that His perfection had to accompany Him from birth. This would then demand that He was born without sin, or He would not have been an acceptable sacrifice. His perfection as a sacrifice in our stead is clear in Hebrews 7:22-27 with which I will close:

Because of this oath, Jesus has become the guarantee of a better covenant. Now there have been many of those priests, since death prevented them from continuing in office; but because Jesus lives forever, He has a permanent priesthood. Therefore He is able to save completely those who come to God through Him, because He always lives to intercede for them. Such a high priest meets our need–one who is holy, blameless, pure, set apart from sinners, exalted above the heavens. Unlike the other high priests, He does not need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for His own sins, and then for the sins of the people. He sacrificed for their sins once for all when He offered Himself.
